Middle School

Our middle school is where learning and purpose meet real life—where adolescents learn to balance independence with collaboration and curiosity with care. They run microeconomy ventures, mentor younger students, reflect on their growth through journals and student-led conferences, and demonstrate their learning through public exhibitions.

Here, students discover and achieve their academic, social, and emotional potential by exploring their world, finding their place in it, and giving back.

Valorization

Montessori middle school is different because we focus on valorization, which helps young adolescents discover they are strong, capable, and worthy of contributing to society. We do this through meaningful work like projects, service, and real-world problem-solving.

By the time our students leave middle school, they are not only prepared for high school, they are leaving with the competence and confidence that come from beginning to know who they are, what matters to them, and how they can make a difference.

Meaningful Work

On any given day, you might find students leading a seminar on justice, preparing a shared lunch, or touring a local farm or museum to learn from adults who have turned their passions into meaningful work.

They design and conduct research in nearby woods and wetlands, plan community projects that serve Northampton and beyond, and take charge of how and why they learn.

Each endeavor connects thought with action and community with responsibility—the real work of growing up.

Mathematics

Math is taught through both traditional and hands-on direct instruction, daily independent practice, and individual and group practice in solving real-life problems.

Life Skills

Practical life skills relevant to the lives of the adolescent include time management and organizational skills, healthy living, financial literacy, conflict resolution, technology, and mindfulness.

Science

Hands-on scientific inquiry activities with an emphasis in critical thinking and data analysis lead students to a better understanding of concepts. In middle school, science becomes an active pursuit not simply an acquisition of information.

Outdoor Adventures

Students travel outside and off campus to take advantage of the many natural resources and institutions in the area.

Every year, students participate in either the Montessori Model UN conference in New York City or a marine biology field study, both one week long.

Friendship and Connection

The Middle School program fosters a student’s academic and life competencies and provides them with opportunities to contribute to the community. This is the heart of what leads toward valorization.
