Specials

In addition to the studies of math, history, geography, and the sciences, specials programs are weaved through the weekly schedule of every student. One day that could mean learning about conjugating verbs in Spanish, the next it could be learning dyeing techniques in Art, band practice in Music, or a maple syrup boil in Outdoor Enrichment.

Our specials unveil passions, hidden talents, and a deeper appreciation for the arts and languages that shape our world.

Art

Art classes at Northampton Montessori introduce students of all ages to art from around the globe and artists throughout history. Our youngest students start with basic techniques like cutting paper and brush handling. Over time, lessons expand to cover watercolors, printmaking, weaving, and beading.

In middle school, art meets twice per week as students delve deeper into different learning approaches and concepts. Classes include discussions of color theory, a mastery of materials, and the practices of embroidery and ceramics.

Music

Music is infused into the everyday experience of Northampton Montessori and it’s the soundtrack to community events and All-School Assemblies. During school hours, sing-alongs in Toddler progress to the introduction of rhythm and instruments in Children’s House and Elementary levels. Eventually, the music program culminates with the formation of the middle school band as students learn to work together as a musical ensemble.

Outdoor Enrichment

The Outdoor Enrichment program at MSN aims to connect students to nature in a meaningful way. On a rotating yearly cycle, students of all ages will learn about animals, plants, and our environment and weather.

Students focus on learning to observe and be comfortable in nature. They learn about the parts of a flower, how to identify tracks, and name different animals, birds, and trees. As they get older, the curriculum gets more practical with the practice of seed saving, the use of different field tools, cooking with harvested crops, and taking field trips to area farms and natural sites to see their lessons come to life in the real world.

Spanish

Connection to other cultures is a key part of the Montessori experience, and that connection comes alive during Spanish lessons. The work grows with the students: toddlers hear Spanish through songs, stories, and play; Children’s House builds a strong base of vocabulary through repetition and listening; and by the time students reach elementary and middle school, they are engaging more intentionally with the language through immersion and practical conversation.
